Extended Description

This iconic Dolomites hike begins at Col Gallina, where a steady ascent leads to the peaceful Lago di Limides — a small alpine lake surrounded by larch trees and framed by the dramatic silhouettes of the Tofane and Falzarego Pass. From here, the trail climbs toward Forcella Averau, opening up to sweeping views over the Ampezzo basin and the main Dolomite groups.

The route continues to Rifugio Averau and then to Rifugio Nuvolau, one of the oldest and most panoramic huts in the Dolomites. From the summit, the 360∞degree view stretches across Pelmo, Civetta, Marmolada, Sorapiss and the entire Ampezzo valley — a true highlight of the day.

The descent leads to Rifugio Scoiattoli and the famous 5 Torri area, home to an open∞air WWI museum. Here, hikers can explore restored trenches and learn about the history of the Italian front during the Great War. Before closing the loop, a short optional detour allows a closer look at the rock towers and their unique formations.

This hike is ideal for hikers with moderate experience who want to explore a variety of landscapes: alpine lakes, panoramic ridges, historical sites and iconic rock formations. The terrain is mostly single∞track with rocky sections but no technical difficulties. A certified hiking guide ensures a safe pace, clear navigation and a high∞quality outdoor experience throughout the day.
